SIP Modeling Tools and Documentation

• Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx)
  The CAMx model from ENVIRON is being used for 8-hour ozone modeling in support of 8-hour ozone State Implementation Plans. The model source code and documentation for CAMx are available on ENVIRON's web site here.
• Community Mutil-Scale Air Quality Model (CMAQ)
  U.S. EPA's CMAQ model is being used for PM2.5 modeling in support of the San Joaquin Valley's PM2.5 SIP. The model source code and documentation are available here.
• Mesoscale Meteorological Model Version 5 (MM5)
  MM5, developed by Penn State University and the National Center for Atmospheric Research, was used to develop meteorological modeling fields for 8-hour ozone and PM2.5 SIP development. The model and its documentation are available here.

Modeling Domains

• All 8-hour ozone SIP modeling for Central California is being performed using the Central California Ozone Study (CCOS) modeling domain. This domain includes all of the 8-hour ozone non-attainment areas in Central California. Click here for a map of the CCOS modeling domain.
• PM2.5 SIP modeling for the San Joaquin Valley is being conducted using the modeling domain shown here.

Modeling Episodes

Central California (8-Hour Ozone)
Two multi-day ozone episodes are being simulated in support of the 8-hour ozone SIPs in Central California. The episodes include the following days:
• July 7-13, 1999
• July 27-August 2, 2000
  During the summer of 2000, a large-scale field study was carried out in Central California. The study collected intensive monitoring data, both at the surface and aloft, in support of SIP preparation for the non-attainment areas in the region. Air quality and meteorological data for the July 27-August 2, 2000 episode were collected during the study, and are available via the Central California Air Quality Studies data access web page here.
